Future Helipads, Vertiports and Pocket Airparks for Urban Air Mobility
This presentation addresses the design and planning aspects of future “air piers” for Urban Air Mobility (UAM). First, the presentation reviews critical issues faced by airport and heliport planners and designers in the last 50 years. It pays special attention to previous UAM concepts developed in the USA, such as Helicopter Networks (1970’s), Vertiport-Civil Tilt Rotor Concept for the North East Corridor (1990’s), and the Small Aircraft Transportation System (2000’s). Then, we look into the future of UAM and discuss “air pier” infrastructure challenges and factors that impact facility design and planning of this emerging air transport system.
