Principles of High-efficiency Electric Flight
The ubiquitous permanent-magnet brushless motor-generator and bi-directional power conditioning are reviewed and optimized as a system, including the battery, with the aid of simple circuit modeling validated by test data. A notional low-speed “regen” electric aircraft is introduced, applying the proposed method of electrical-power optimization and using its rotors as either a propeller or airborne wind turbine, depending on flight regime. Low-RPM, low-noise, and low-diameter advantages of the “many-blade” rotor are discussed. The presentation concludes with a short video simulating the various flight regimes of this aircraft, which has been named Coulomb Keeper.
